Music As Medicine - Part Two - Why You Should Dose Yourself Nightly

Did you know the specific type of music you choose to listen to affects your mood and mental health?

This means by consciously selecting the music you’re listening to, you will be able to control the desired outcome, adjusting your hormone levels naturally through music therapy.

One of the ways to use music in a therapeutic way is as a sleep aid. Music has been proven to both help users get to sleep more quickly and improve sleep quality and efficiency, meaning more consistent rest and less waking up during the night.

The music you choose as your sleep aid has less to do with the genre, and more to do with the tempo, or speed at which the music is played – often measured in beats per minute (BPM), with 60-80 BPM being the recommended dosage.

An easy way to choose your songs for your nighttime playlist is to listen to songs during the day to see what relaxes you. It is believed your body will actually sync with the slower playing music since a heartbeat at rest is 60-100 BPM.

Studies have shown listening to music at bedtime has reduced the length of time is takes to fall asleep from an average of 27-69 minutes, down to just 6-13 minutes.

Would you like help creating a relaxing nighttime music playlist? Just ask.
